In early November, a key piece of legislation authorizing the creation of the BeltLine Zoning Overlay was introduced by City Council. This legislation creates the regulatory framework and design standards that will provide guidance to developers and planners as the enormous project is implemented. While this vote does not include land in Lake Claire directly, it does cover the nearby areas of Morningside, Inman Park, Piedmont Park, and areas north and south of each. During December and January, the City Planning Department has been meeting with Neighborhood Planning Units to explain the Zoning Overlay and solicit feedback. The public input process includes a public hearing on Thursday, January 25th at 6PM. The hearing will be held in the Council Chamber on the Second Floor of City Hall at 55 Trinity Avenue, SW , Atlanta , GA 30303. www.lakeclaire.org From newscast@lists.lakeclaire.org Fri Jan 26 03:49:49 2007 From: newscast@lists.lakeclaire.org (newscast@lists.lakeclaire.org) Date: Thu, 25 Jan 2007 22:49:49 -0500 Subject: [LCN Newscast] Candler Park Pool Meeting, Shrek, Oakhurst Cooperative Preschool, and LCN Emails meet the 21st Century! Message-ID: Dear Neighbors... Happy Friday. Lots to cover! 1) Candler Park Pool Update & Information Meeting 2) Lake Claire Movie Nights begins today (Friday)! 3) Oakhurst Cooperative Preschool to Hold Information Sessions 4) LCN will soon roll out a new + improved email newscast system ---------------------------------------------------------------------------= ---- 1) CANDLER PARK POOL UPDATE & INFORMATION MEETING MONDAY, FEB 5TH You've probably noticed the sound of silence over at Candler Park=85 no bulldozers, nail guns or jack hammers. Despite the best efforts of the City, renovation of the Candler Park Pool and nine other city pools has been delayed. The Commissioner of Parks and Recreation, Dianne Harnell-Cohen, reported in a January 23rd meeting with the Candler Park Pool Association (CPPA) the construction delay is being worked through in the City's procurement process and the department anticipates starting renovations during the Fall 2007. However, the Commissioner re-committed that the CP Pool and pool house will be renovated. (The City is awaiting the procurement bids to assure that the Shade Structure and Splash and Splay & Spray Area will be included. We should know that for sure by the end of March.) For CPPA to continue to operate the pool this summer, we will have to drastically increase membership. Unfortunately, the pool operated at a loss last year. CPPA and the Commissioner understand that without a renovated and improved pool, increasing membership will be a very difficult task. For this reason, the City has offered to run the pool as a public facility open from 10 AM =96 8 PM (or thereabouts) for Summer 2007. This is an offer that the community as a whole must discuss. The CPPA invites any members, swimmers, potential swimmers or interested neighbors to attend an Information Forum on Monday, February 5th at 7PM at the First Existentialist Congregation at 470 Candler Park Drive. We will provide an up to the minute update on the status of the pool and CPPA's efforts. We also need to hear from you as we decide how to proceed this summer. Please help us publicize this meeting by forwarding this email to others. For future updates and additional information please check our website at www.candlerparkpool.com or email info@candlerparkpool.com. If you know of anyone else who would like stay up to date on pool plans, renovations and happenings please have them send an email to subscribe@candlerparkpool.com. Thank you. SESSIONS Oakhurst Cooperative Preschool (OCP), a non-profit preschool serving families in the City of Decatur and surrounding neighborhoods, will be holding information sessions in January and February. Interested families are invited to come learn about the school's programs, meet the teachers, and tour the school. Open houses will be held Saturday, January 27, from 10 =96 11:30 a.m. =B7 Thursday, February 1, from 7 =96 8:30 p.m. =B7 and Saturday, February 10, from 10 =96 11:30 a.m. at the school. OCP is located at the Episcopal Church of the Epiphany, 2089 Ponce De Leon Avenue NE in Atlanta, at the corner of Ponce de Leon Avenue and East Lake Drive. Attendance at one of these information sessions is required of all applicants. The sessions are for adults and babes-in-arms only, but childcare for preschool-aged and school-aged children will be offered on a first come, first served basis. To reserve space for childcare, R.S.V.P via e-mail to info@oakhurstcooppreschool.com! Founded in 2005 by a group of dedicated parents, Oakhurst Co-op is preparing now for its third year and will be accepting children aged 2 through 4 years (as of Sept. 1, 2007) for the 2007-2008 school year. The school offers a nurturing environment and a terrific teacher-to-child ratio. OCP's unique curriculum encourages children to explore and learn about themselves and the world through play, art, games, music and singing, puppetry, books, food, dance and the natural environment. Cooperative preschools, which are run by parents, date back to the 1920s at least. They peaked in the 1970s in the U.S. and became less popular after that, but are enjoying a renaissance today because of parents' growing desire to play a larger role in their children's development and education. OCP is staffed by professional teachers, but parents are involved in every aspect of the school from its administration to its daily classroom operations. Applications for enrollment must be postmarked by February 15. For more information, please visit www.oakhurstcooppreschool.org or e-mail info@oakhurstcooppreschool.org. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------= ---- 4. SAY GOODBYE TO THESE OLD NEWSCASTS! Lake Claire will be switching to a new email delivery system which offers us to the chance to better communicate with the neighborhood. We can send more informative emails that include pictures and rich graphics. It offers a one-click sign-up and unsubscribe support. (No more passwords to remember!) Plus, you can forward it to friends and neighbors and they can sign up for the newscast right from the email.
