Free "SLOW DOWN" yard signs will be available from PEDS, metro
Atlanta's pedestrian advocacy organization. These eye-catching 14" x
20" signs send a clear message to those drivers who think your
neighborhood street is a highway: "SLOW DOWN! =96 Kill speed, not
kids."
HOW TO GET THEM
-----------------------------------------
PEDS will distribute the signs at our Slow Down Campaign Kickoff event
Saturday, July 8th, from 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM in Grant Park, next to
the Cyclorama (you can use Zoo parking). You can even pick up signs
on behalf of your association (limit 50) to distribute at your next
neighborhood meeting. These signs work best when displayed in
neighborhood front yards, not in PEDS' office closet. So help us get
them out! Please publicize the availability of our "SLOW DOWN!" signs
in your neighborhood or NPU newsletter and website.
Any signs left over after the July 8th event will be available for
pick-up from PEDS' office at 57 Forsyth St. NW, Suite 222-G, Atlanta,
GA 30303. After July 8th, call Michael Orta at PEDS (404-522-3747),
and arrange a time to pick them up.
NOT FOR SALE
-----------------------------------------
The Georgia Governor's Office of Highway Safety paid for these signs
as part of PEDS' slow down campaign. You may NOT sell them.
FACTS
-----------------------------------------
Speed is the most influential factor in determining whether a
pedestrian survives a crash.
At 20 mph, only 5% of walkers are killed.
At 30 mph, 45% of walkers are killed and most others are seriously injured.
At 40 mph, 85% of walkers are killed.
A pedestrian is hit by a car every 7 seconds in the United States, and
about 5000 are killed every year.
"Struck by car" is the second leading cause of unintended death for
children aged 5 to 9.
Metro Atlanta is ranked as the 12th most dangerous large metropolitan
region for pedestrians in the United States.
These signs remind drivers to SLOW DOWN!
Thanks for helping make metro Atlanta safe and accessible for all pedestria=
