A description and map of the plan, in addition to a petition for approval or disapproval was delivered to each residence on the street. As of 2005 January 11, support for the plan is unanimous, but only among the 11 property owners who have responded thus far. 12 additional approvals must be collected for the city to move forward with the plan. Before the city proceeds with this project, 75% of the 30 total Southerland terrace property owners must approve the plan by signing the petition. Approval of the plan is in jeopardy due to the number of rental properties on the street, the legal owners of which may not have received the petition or taken the time to consider the proposal. It is therefore essential that all legal owners residing on the street make their opinion known as to whether the proposal should be approved or disapproved! The final deadline to submit the petitions to the city is this coming Tuesday, 2005 January 18. If you or someone you know is a Sutherland terrace resident that has not yet returned the petition to Ryan Gesser at 1838 McLendon avenue, please do so immediately! Please contact Ryan at 404-840-6132 or mclendon@lakeclaire.org if you have questions, comments, or can offer support locating interested Southerland Terrace property owners who have not yet returned their petition! Are you a history buff? Did you find out something interesting about your home and its previous owners during a renovation project? Then this message is for you! "If Walls Could Talk," is a weekly series on home & Garden Television (HGTV) that explores the many homes across the country with intriguing pasts. The series profiles homeowners who make surprising historical discoveries about their homes as they research and restore them. Believing that "every home has a history," each episode features three houses across the country where homeowners have made amazing discoveries. Recent stories include: - In their 1870 stone house, a Texas couple uncovers an initialed powder horn, which surprisingly connects their property to the legendary Davy Crockett. - Resoration leads a California homeowner to a box of negatives in his 1912 bungalow. A story about a Hollywood photographer and 1930's film stars soon developed. - In Massachusetts, a 1600's log house reveals one family's 300- year old history on the property, after the current homeowner discovers a 17th century document box and cobbler's bench, complete with tools. The series is produced for HGTV by High Noon Productions of Denver, Colorado. The company produces several series for HGTV including "The Secret Gardens of..." and "Modern Masters" and "Dream Drives." The producers behind High Noon have created several series and award-winning primetime documentaries for cable networks like HGTV, Food Network, Animal Planet and the Discovery Channel. "We should not reject this debate out of hand. We should embrace it," Isakson said. We shouldn't reject personal investment. We should encourage it." Isakson criticized those reluctant to admit Social Security is in crisis. He also urged his colleagues to act now and strengthen Social Security for their children and grandchildren. "I heard someone in opposition to reform last night criticize the president for saying it's their money," Isakson said. "They said it's not their money; it's my mother's money. Well that's what's wrong with the system." ----------------------------- Rep. John Lewis Hosts Social Security Town Hall Meeting February 8, 2005 - President Bush recently outlined his plan to privatize Social Security. Congressman John Lewis will hold a town meeting to allow 5th District residents to hear from experts on Social Security and decide how they feel about the President's proposal. Social Security is not in crisis. The government's own analysis found that even with no changes, Social Security could pay the full benefits originally promised until at least 2042, and pay very substantial benefits thereafter. In the long term Social Security does need some changes so that it will continue to meet its obligations after 2042. However, incremental fixes will preserve the program so that future generations can continue to depend on it. As a member of the House Committee on Ways and Means, I will work to ensure that Social Security continues to provide dependable monthly incomes, not just for the current generation of retirees, but for all Americans across the generations. We must strengthen Social Security, not destroy it. I want to know your views. Please join me on Saturday February 26, 2005 at 10:00 a.m. at the Loudermilk Center (40 Courtland Street) for a Town Hall Meeting on Social Security. Located at 695 North Avenue (currently The Masquerade), this mill used steam power to manufacture wood-shaving packing material. This building pre-dates the Sear Tower, which most people know currently as City Hall East. In the early 1980's the mill was used as a neighborhood pizza restaurant and movie theater. The most remarkable thing about this building is the turn-of-the- century architecture and beautiful Georgia granite walls. Inside, most of the polished wood and original metal machinery have been preserved and incorporated into the decor. Help us save the Mill--Immediate Action Is Critical. Send your tax-deductible contribution to The Atlanta Preservation Center, 327 St. Paul Ave. SE, Atlanta, GA 30312. Write "Excelsior Mill" in the memo section of the check to ensure that your funds go to this particular project. Among other things, your contribution will be used to pay for a study of the building's history and viability for preservation, to be submitted to the Atlanta Urban Design Commission to support the designation of this building to a zoning category of Landmark Building/Site (LBS). Here is what else you can do Right Now: 1. Contact your City Council representative and members at large (especially those on the Zoning Committee) and let them know what is going on. Express your opinion regarding the preservation of this part of Atlanta's history. Please ask them to support Landmark rezoning for this building. 2. While you have their attention please tell them that you also have concerns about how easy it is to get a demolition permit in this City. Right now there is NO architectural review process required and once issued, demolition permits can be renewed without review for many, many years. Example: The Varsity building on North Avenue has a demolition permit which has been repeatedly renewed for many years, without any requirements for City review. Owners keep these permits in effect because they know it would be nearly impossible to get a demo permit today on their buildings, usually because the buildings are of some historic value. Legislation is required to remedy this situation. If you would like to learn more of if you want someone to come talk to your group, please call me at 404-892-5066.
