2004 Oct 05 Tuesday is International Walk to School Day!
Mary Lin Elementary (Lake Claire's public school) we be joining
schools from around the world to celebrate Walk to School Day.
-----------------------
Some facts about why Mary Lin PTA is encouraging our community to
walk to school:
Thirty years ago, more than 66 percent of all children walked to
school; currently only 13 percent of American children walked or
bike to school.
The percentage of overweight children has tripled since 1980.
Thirty percent of American children do not exercise moderately
30 minutes per day, five days per week or vigorously 20 minutes
per day, three days per week.
Fewer car trips mean less air pollutants, which is particularly
important for children because their respiratory systems are
still developing.
It takes about 10 minutes to walk a quarter of a mile or bike an
entire mile.
International Walk to School Day gives participants the
opportunity to see the challenges pedestrians face when walking,
making them more conscientious drivers when they are driving.
International Walk to School Day reminds communities that
walking should be a safe transportation option.
Driving slower saves lives.
