Mary Lin Elementary (Lake Claire's public school) we be joining schools from around the world to celebrate Walk to School Day. ----------------------- Some facts about why Mary Lin PTA is encouraging our community to walk to school: Thirty years ago, more than 66 percent of all children walked to school; currently only 13 percent of American children walked or bike to school. The percentage of overweight children has tripled since 1980. Thirty percent of American children do not exercise moderately 30 minutes per day, five days per week or vigorously 20 minutes per day, three days per week. Fewer car trips mean less air pollutants, which is particularly important for children because their respiratory systems are still developing. It takes about 10 minutes to walk a quarter of a mile or bike an entire mile. International Walk to School Day gives participants the opportunity to see the challenges pedestrians face when walking, making them more conscientious drivers when they are driving. International Walk to School Day reminds communities that walking should be a safe transportation option. Driving slower saves lives. CSPH is a really wonderful place if you have to grow up somewhere other than with your own family and the staff who make up their new family make this a very special place. The website is http://www.csph.org/ if you'd like to read more about it. The one thing that I've just been sweating over since leaving office has been the CSPH Christmas party. Once you start buying Christmas presents for the kids there, you just can't stop. I've had the great fortune to have a staff at city hall who could handle the really complex project of providing special Christmas gifts for on the list given to us from each child. Unfortunately, I just don't have the staff (present count: zero) to coordinate the activities this year and I was about to give up on it entirely. My friends Kevin Roush and Michael Cox have also taken an interest in CSPH and so we are working together to try and muddle through this thing, but we need your help. Here's the deal: We've got 100 or so kids (and a few tend to come and go back to their families). Between now and December, we need to find out what they want for Christmas (in great detail), find people to agree to sponsor a kid and buy gifts (around $75-100 per child) and/or a winter coat (usually $20-$75 depending on age, size and how good a shopper you are), and return them to us before Thanksgiving (we'll have a timeline later). We'll need people to help wrap gifts, people to help us organize a party (we know how to do it, we just need bodies to help), people to help us get the gifts to CSPH (last year it took a fleet of 6 of the biggest SUV's you've seen inside the Perimeter), and people to run around and make sure all the loose ends get tied. You never want to miss a child at a Christmas party. We really need your help this year. If you are interested in helping us organize any part of this, I'd like to hear from you ASAP. If you are interested in sponsoring a kid for their presents and/or their new coat, I'd like to hear from you ASAP. If you don't want to help organize or sponsor a kid, but want to give us money or a retail gift card so we can do the shopping for you, I'd like to hear from you ASAP (if you know me well, you know I love to shop with other people's money!) Those of you who live out of town or prefer shopping online can participate--no fuss, no muss. You can sponsor a kid, order the stuff on-line at your favorite toy outlet (Toys-R-Us, Target, or whatever you like), and have it shipped directly to us--we'll wrap it and deliver it. Same with the coat--Lands End, Eddie Bauer, Children's Place or other retails will do the same--most are having really good sales--just order it up and send it on. If you are interested in that option, let me know and I'll tell you where to ship it. There are other things we could use or you might have some ideas, so feel free to let me know what you think! You can feel free to forward this Newscast to others you know might like to help. If I don't hear back from you, I won't contact you again about this, so jump on it if you're going to! This is really a fun project, it's over in early December and it will melt your heart to participate. But we are running late and I'm completely overwhelmed by the prospect of it all. Kevin Rouch, Michael Cox, and I will be setting up a meeting really soon so we can get together with folks who want to help us coordinate gifts for 5-10 kids (like a pyramid scheme--you handle the details for those kids--recruit your friends, your office, your church and help us make sure it all comes together--just a little leadership goes a long way). We've got to get out to CSPH home and get those wish lists very soon. We can't wait to hear from you! Thanks! Around 2004 Dec 03, an opened package was found in a driveway on Almeta that was addressed to a house on Ridgewood. It had been opened and the contents scattered about. A neighbor called the police and they responded. Three Suggestions: 1) If you will be out of town for the holidays, you may want to fill out a Special Patrol Request Form. It will let patrolling officers know no one is home at your address, so if they see someone on your property they can take appropriate action. Download the "Special Patrol Request" form: http://www.lakeclaire.org/docs/Special_Patrol_Req.pdf Fax, mail, hand carry, or call in the information to the Zone Six Precinct. 2) If you are expecting packages, ask a neighbor to check so the package can be taken in or not left in view of the street. Also have someone pick up the mail daily, or have your mail delivery halted from 3-30 days. Download PS Form 8076, "Authorization to Hold Mail" form: http://www.usps.com/forms/_pdf/ps8076.pdf Please note that this will not stop UPS, DHL, FedEx, et cetera deliveries. 3) If you are staying home and notice a suspicious person looking around your or a neighbor's property... !!! CALL 911 !!! Note as best you can the height, age, gender, race, clothing, vehicle, where you last saw the person, and in which direction he is heading. - Carol Mercer, LCN V.P. The variance request it is to construct is to reduce the setback from the required 7' feet to 2'4" for an additional length of 15'5" to construct an addition of 15'5" by 25'. ~ John Siebenaler and Ranee Seither at 1768 McLendon Ave. are requesting a variance in the side yard setback to complete a second story addition over a portion of the house that sits within the 7' side yard setback. The addition would not change the footprint of the house. ~ Nabil Hammam is requesting a variance to reduce the side yard setback to 4 feet, rather than the currently required 7 feet, on the north side of the lot at 273 Matthews Ave. to construct a house. + Potluck Dinner: Bring an appetite and favorite covered dish! Three types of lasagna will be provided by the association, and neighbors are asked to bring a side dish, salad, or desert. The people who found the package were told to call 911 and report it, but we do not know if that occurred. The family on Ridgewood was out of town. We have recently posted a Newscast alert about this type of incident and have advised everyone to ask his neighbors to pick up any packages that are left when he is out of town. I wanted to alert you all because this is the second time within a week that the same thing has happened on the same street and the package contents found on Almeta. I believe the last time this occurred it was either a Friday night or a Saturday night. It was reported to 911. I do remember the contents were found on a weekend. Can you help solve the problem? Yes... 1) If you see a suspicious person (someone walking down the street looking into cars, or "checking out" houses) !!! CALL 911 !!! Note as best you can the height, age, gender, race, clothing, vehicle, where you last saw the person, and in which direction he is heading. 2) If you are expecting packages, ask a neighbor to check so the package can be taken in or not left in view of the street. Also have someone pick up the mail daily, or have your mail delivery halted from 3-30 days. Download PS Form 8076, "Authorization to Hold Mail": http://www.usps.com/forms/_pdf/ps8076.pdf Please note that this will not stop UPS, DHL, FedEx, et cetera deliveries. 3) If you will be out of town for the holidays, you may want to fill out a Special Patrol Request Form. - Carol Mercer, LCN V.P. Electoral College (2004 Dec 13) All 15 Georgia electors, selected on Nov 02, voted for Bush/Cheney as pledged. The electoral vote is scheduled to be counted and certified at a joint session of Congress on 2005 Jan 06. The national totals are: President - George W. Bush 286 - John Kerry 251 - John Edwards 1 Vice President - Richard Cheney 286 - John Edwards 252 (Note: An unknown Minnesota elector, presumably by accident, voted for John Edwards in both of the state's separate Presidential and Vice Presidential secret ballots. It may be unconstitutional for an elector to vote for the same person for both offices. Article II, Section 1 of the U.S. Constitution forbids it, while Amendment 12 neither specifically allows nor forbids it.) Please take extra precautions in securing your home and cars. --------------------- Recent incidents: -Two packages stolen off front porches (very visible) on Ridgewood and the contents left on Almeta Ave. -Four burglaries on and around Ridgecrest (Atlanta and DeKalb side). These may be professionals as only good jewelry was taken. -One burglary last week and stolen car on Almeta Ave. 1800 block of Almeta was burglarized around 2 p.m. on Tuesday. Entrance was gained through a locked, but not dead bolted, sliding glass door at the rear of the house. The alarm system had not been set. Items stolen included the CPU of a computer (but not other more valuable parts of the computer); a silver watch (but not the very valuable silver bracelet next to it); and drill bits (but not the drill). Unbeknownst to the victim, the thieves also took the keys to her two-month old Toyota SUV. The thieves returned for the vehicle Friday- Saturday night; it was recovered Saturday p.m. -One burglary from an open garage. The victim was working and left the garage open for a few minutes. Someone came in and took tools and a cell phone. Our crime goes up at Christmas. Lock your cars and houses even if you go inside for just a few minutes. Make sure you use your dead bolts and if you do not have them, install them. Let your neighbors know if you are out of town and make arrangements for packages and mail. Call 911 if there is suspicious activity in your area: someone going around looking into cars, into houses etc qualifies as suspicious. Someone going around ringing doorbells when it is obvious no one is at home qualifies as suspicious. Most times the person is casing the area to come back later. Be safe, and Happy Holidays!
