If so, ask yourself how long you want to keep that tree alive. Because in the in the long run, you can't have your tree and ivy too... "Hedera helix" is commonly called English ivy. It is a native of Europe, but has become naturalized in America after importation by English colonists. It is considered invasive. English ivy outcompetes both grasses, herbs and trees, often reducing animal feeding habitats. In warm areas, H. helix can grow throughout the year and can outcompetes native vegetation that is dormant during the winter. Ivy is a notorious refuge for rats and other undesirable vermin. Many gardeners and home landscapers remove ivy and replace it with plant species likely to attract desirable wildlife such as birds, butterflies, and beneficial bugs. For trees it poses the following problems: - Ivy competes with the trees, especially seedlings, for water and nutrients. - Ivy vines eventually grow into a dense cover on the bark of the tree's trunk. depriving the bark of the normal contact with air and micro-organisms. - Ivy vines grow to a very large size - often four or more inches in 30 or less years - and have a very high water content thus add considerable weight to the tree making it more susceptible to toppling and blow-down. - The stiff, waxy characteristics of Ivy leaves hold water, ice, and snow which also add to weight and exacerbate conditions leading to toppling and blow-down. - Mature Ivy grows in spiral pattern as opposed to the horizontal-vertical pattern of the immature plant thus it 'furls' out around the branches and trunk further reducing the ability of the tree to perform photo-synthesis. - When Ivy grows up the tree seeking the light it needs to mature and propagate, it eventually covers the apical stem or apex of the tree. The tree reacts as if it has been topped: experiencing biologic stress and sending messages of its distress out to the types of micro-organisms whose purpose is to hasten the demise of the tree. - The Ivy growing around the tree has supplanted the deciduous plants which have a growth and decay cycle that replenishes the nutrients in the soil. How to Remove Ivy from Trees: (Here are the basics, details are at http://www.noivyleague.com/Pages/rem_meth_girdling.html ) - Cut the vine at waist height, be careful not to cut into the tree bark. - Loosen the vine around the tree base. - Generally is best NOT to remove the upper vines, as it can damage the bark, and bring down branches or yellow jacket nests onto your head. The vines will eventually die and fall on their own. - Remove the roots. If the root can not be removed by hand, strip the bark and notch the exposed section of the vine. Paint on an undiluted herbicide such as glyphosate. - If English ivy is growing on tree-ferns, take care that all pieces of the ivy are removed. The growth of H. helix can be sustained by the fibrous nature of the trunk. Sources: http://tncweeds.ucdavis.edu/moredocs/hedhel01.html http://www.noivyleague.com/ . Is there one you can never seem to avoid on your way to work? Lake Claire residents (and everyone else) can report potholes on city streets online. The response time is amazingly fast, often only a few days. Just get the street address nearest the pothole, and go to: http://www.ci.atlanta.ga.us/HowDoI/ReportPothole.aspx?section=howdoi and fill in the information. As McLendon Avenue is in the process of being completely reworked, it is probably best not to bother reporting potholes on that street at the present time. . Now that we’ve had five years to recuperate from our first tour of homes in 1999, the Kirkwood Neighbors Organization ("KNO") is ready to do it all over again. The 2nd Kirkwood Tour of Homes is set to take place on May 15 and 16. The annual KNO Spring Fling and softball game is also set for Saturday, May 15. The tour of homes will consist of 12 of Kirkwood finest houses, including several late 19th century and early 20th century Victorians, American Four-squares, and Craftsman bungalows, as well as some of Kirkwood’s newest homes and a loft at the former Kirkwood Elementary School. The tour will run from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Saturday and from noon to 4:00 p.m. on Sunday. Tickets may be purchased in advance for $12 at Sweet Java Brown and for $15 on Saturday and Sunday at Bessie Branham Park (at the intersection of Kirkwood Road and Delano Drive, 1 block north of the Kirkwood Library and the Zone 6 Police Precinct). Don’t miss this opportunity for a peek inside some of your neighbors’ homes. Most importantly, all proceeds from the tour of homes will go to the purchase of new equipment for the children’s playground at Bessie Branham Park (over $26,000 raised so far). Saturday, May 15 also marks the date of our annual Spring Fling and softball game at Bessie Branham Park in the heart of Kirkwood. This year, weather permitting, Southern Playgrounds, Inc. and Pete Zirnheld have donated the use of a hot air balloon on Saturday, beginning at about 5:00 p.m. for tethered rides in the park. Food and drinks will also be available for purchase. Again, all proceeds will go to our playground fund. The annual Kirkwood/East Lake softball game will begin at approximately 11 a.m. Anyone (regardless of where you really live) with a glove is welcome to play. There will also be numerous artists booths featuring fine arts, jewelry and other crafts for sale. Several children’s activities, including face painting, sack races, a cake-walk and other games, are also planned. This holiday weekend is a great opportunity for you to make life a little better for many of your neighbors. Take a few minutes to ensure that a couple with a stroller can comfortably walk past your home. How often do you walk the entire length of your own sidewalk? Probably not very often. We often drive from our homes, or typically only walk in one direction, or maybe we just cross the street to visit a neighbor. You can view sidewalk upkeep as a homeowner's burden. Or you can choose to look at it the other way: Use of sidewalks is everyone's civic right. This is particularly true for our neighbors with special needs, or for whom walking in the street can be more dangerous: - Children and senior citizens, - Those with mobility issues, - Those with visual impairments or deafness, and - Those who rely on MARTA rather than cars. How can you help? While some sidewalks may be in bad shape structurally, many more a just plain blocked. Without us meaning to, our sidewalks can carelessly become car-parks, trash piles, gardens, and forests. New spring growth may now obstruct a sidewalk that was free this past winter. You just need a minute to take a good look at the state of your sidewalk. Here are some tips: - Trim tree branches that are lower than about 6'-8" (door height) from the ground, - Prune hedges that encroach on the pedestrian's path, - Park so that your car does not project out of your driveway into the sidewalk, - Keep the pedestrian right-of-way free of trash cans and yard waste, and - Remove plants growing in pavement cracks. - Avoid planting large tree species in the planting strip, - If you plant a hedge, set the plants back a couple feet from the sidewalk edge. - If you live next to a vacant lot, consider "adopting" that sidewalk, - If you need help, ask a neighbor (or offer to help if vice versa), - If you are doing a home renovation, repair major sidewalk problems at that time, or - If someone is requesting a variance, consider if sidewalk repair is a topical issue. Whether you espouse "compassionate conservatism" or you "think globally and act locally," the edge of your own front yard is a great place to make our neighborhood even more neighborly. . There are concerns about the effectiveness of the bulbouts in promoting the safe use of McLendon by motorists, cyclists, and pedestrians, all of whom share the roadway on a daily basis. The bulbouts' purpose as a traffic calming measure and safety device is twofold: to provide a refuge that narrows the width of street that pedestrians must cross and to create a "pinch point" that causes traffic to slow down. The bulbouts will also serve to define and shelter on-street parking areas between intersections, which will be limited to the southern (eastbound) side of McLendon. In addition to intersection and pedestrian accessibility improvements, bulbouts have always been part of the conceptual plan to slow vehicle traffic along the length of McLendon Avenue. However, the City is implementing a construction plan that includes bulbouts projecting 10 feet from the existing curb, a size numerous people (some of whom have experience in traffic engineering, many others who are simply applying common sense) think is unsafe because it narrows the travel lanes too much. Of particular concern is bicycle traffic, which is especially prevalent in Lake Claire since McLendon is part of the Atlanta-Stone Mountain PATH trail. McLendon has long been recognized as a preferred cyclist route, reflected in 1995 when the City designated the roadway on its Commuter Bicycling Plan. Many residents are avid cyclists who use the roadway for recreation and commuting to nearby work and leisure destinations. Lake Claire has always felt a sense of responsibility for ownership of the PATH since it brings so many people to and through the neighborhood. For these reasons, the neighborhood has consistently emphasized the importance of bicycle accommodations in its Community Development Plans, review of conceptual plans for traffic calming improvements, and other personal communications with the City. To address these concerns, the neighborhood worked closely with the City throughout 2003 before construction began to ensure that the McLendon plan would enhance bikeability, or at least make no changes that would permanently discourage safe cycling in Lake Claire. At that time, the neighborhood engaged the assistance of Dennis Hoffarth from the Atlanta Bicycle Campaign to apply his experience working with the City on bike-friendly traffic plans and advocate the neighborhood's interests and those of the greater cycling community. Not surprisingly, many residents were alarmed when the first bulbouts were constructed in February 2004 and it became apparent that cyclists and motorists would be sharing less space on McLendon. Since construction began, Lake Claire and ABC articulated their concerns to the City that the outcome of the project might be a less safe McLendon. The City proceeded with construction until May 13th, when the City's project managers, City council representatives Archibong and Fauver (who represents Candler Park) agreed to meet to review the plans and any solutions that might be feasible at this point. Despite concerns about the project schedule and budget, the City seems to recognize that Lake Claire has always emphasized the need to enhance the mutual safety of motorists, cyclists, and pedestrians that share McLendon, and that the existing design plan may threaten this objective. Following this meeting, the City's project manager addressed the LCN monthly meeting on May 19th to hear residents' feedback about the construction and advise the neighborhood that the City had temporarily suspended work to evaluate what could be done at this point. The overwhelming majority of residents are very much in favor of the traffic calming measures but expressed concern about the size of the bulbouts that have already been constructed. A recent "Lane Ranger" article that appeared in the May 30th edition of the AJC further articulated many of the residents' and cyclists' concerns and brought more attention to the project. The City is undoubtedly in a tough position since they must balance the competing concerns about motorist, cyclist, and pedestrian safety while allowing adequate space for on street parking and safe passage of City vehicles (e.g., MARTA, sanitary, and emergency services). McLendon's narrow width (32 feet) precludes having adequate travel lanes, on street parking, and a dedicated bike lane. The alternative that the neighborhood and ABC have been advocating is to reduce the size of the bulbouts to 6 or 7 feet, and use striping to create a bikeable shoulder that provides refuge for cyclists, especially on uphill sections where motor vehicles are most likely to create an unsafe situation by passing a cyclist. At this point in the project, the City's job is that much tougher because we have asked the City to better accommodate cyclists without compromising the other improvements planned for McLendon (e.g., intersection improvements at Lakeshore/Claire/Southerland and Howard Circle) while completing the project within budget and on schedule. The City's project manager has made no firm commitments, but has been responsive to our concerns and indicated that they are looking at a wide range of possibilities, including cutting back the bulbouts already in place, using a smaller size for remaining bulbouts, and implementing the neighborhood's and ABC's suggestions for using striping to provide space for cyclists within the existing roadway. Without question it is frustrating to residents and visitors of Lake Claire that McLendon remains unfinished, and that project completion could be delayed until the end of the summer to accommodate any changes that City is willing and able to make. However, most people agree that it would be better to make sure the project is done right to address the neighborhood's concerns and suggestions rather than to allow the City to hastily complete the project and create a less safe environment for our residents, children, and visitors. The ability to travel safely by bike, foot, or car, for commuting or recreation, adds considerably to the quality of life in Lake Claire and this project deserves the neighborhood's commitment to see that it is completed in our best interests. Stay tuned to future Lake Claire "Newscast" postings and the June LCN meeting for future updates on the City's plans and schedule for completing the project. . There is a wealth of natural wildflowers and other native plants being choked by these invasives. The future of the forest depends on our removal of these pests. If you have walked through the forest, you can see the (beginning) fruits of our labor from the first work days! Ivy has been cut from most the trees in the southeast corner and the area around the twin tulip poplars has been cleared of most of the ivy and invasive shrubs. We will be working in small groups of 4-6 people. If you have lobbers, clippers, or pruning saws, please bring them with you. There is poison ivy in the woods, so you might want to wear long pants and long sleeves. We will be working in the shade of the forest. Meet at 10 o'clock at the mulch pile at the end of the lower parking lot entrance from the Frazer Center. (It is the right turn off just past the gardens when going up the hill.)
