>From our V.P. of Public Health, Dan Tompkins...

-------------------

A friend and neighbor, G. P. Burdell, works at the Center for
Disease Control and gave me an update on the several recent
cases of West Nile Virus in Kirkwood, our adjacent neighborhood
to the south. So far, no people have been infected, as all nine
of the confirmed cases were found in Kirkwood's rat and pigeon
population. CDC is working with city authorities to address the
issue. It is unusual to have such an outbreak this early in the
season, and CDC suspects it is related to the large number of
areas with stagnant water in Kirkwood, breeding areas for the
mosquitoes that carry West Nile Virus.

Dr. Burdell suggests that we simply avoid Kirkwood, if possible.
The risk of it spreading to Lake Claire is small due to our more
sanitary conditions and milder spring/summer temperatures.
