P. Burdell, works at the Center for Disease Control and gave me an update on the several recent cases of West Nile Virus in Kirkwood, our adjacent neighborhood to the south. So far, no people have been infected, as all nine of the confirmed cases were found in Kirkwood's rat and pigeon population. CDC is working with city authorities to address the issue. It is unusual to have such an outbreak this early in the season, and CDC suspects it is related to the large number of areas with stagnant water in Kirkwood, breeding areas for the mosquitoes that carry West Nile Virus. Dr. Burdell suggests that we simply avoid Kirkwood, if possible. The risk of it spreading to Lake Claire is small due to our more sanitary conditions and milder spring/summer temperatures. If you have any questions, please contact me at my e-mail address below. Daniel D. Tompkins Lake Claire V.P. of Public Health health@lakeclaire.org . The girls described the man as Hispanic, with a goatee, wearing a white tee-shirt and driving a white sedan with black trim. This is the second report of such an incident (same description of perpetrator) that has been brought to our attention. Police reports have been made on both incidents. [This is an automated message.] The "Newscast" about West Nile Virus in Kirkwood is an April Fool's joke. George P. Burdell is the perpetual phantom student at Georgia Tech. He does hold several imaginary doctorates, though. Daniel D. Tompkins is not the Lake Claire V.P. of Public Health. He was the Vice President of the United States under James Monroe. For extra credit: What movie is that from? By the way, your e-mail has been forwarded to Kevin Egan of Kirkwood's homeowner's association, who is suspected of attempting to perpetrate an April Fool's hoax on Lake Claire's Executive Committee. ------------------------- VARIANCES 1. Nancy Floyd at 1986 Palifox will present a request for a variance at the April 17 Lake Claire Neighbors meeting. The request is for a side yard setback variance from the required 7 feet to 5.5 feet. The existing house is 5.5 feet from the property line and the residents wish to add a room on the back of the house that will extend 10 feet; it will be on the footprint of an existing porch. They also are planning to add a screened porch that will extend an additional 14 feet. 2. John Maxey at 2118 Palifox Dr. The variance seeks to reduce the existing 7 ft. side yard setback to 3 ft. The house now sits approximately 3.5 ft from the side property line. He would like to add an additional story and additional 300 sf. to the rear of the house, all maintaining the current 3.5 ft setback. 3. Dawn Haynie and Chad Polk at 420 Harold Ave. They are requesting a variance to re-build a single-car (10' x 20') detached garage in the rear of the house as a 12' x 24' single-car garage. The new structure will match the house with wood lap siding, exposed rafters, and carriage doors. .
