Lakers & Claires:
This is a brief introduction to what will likely become a new
regular feature of Lake Claire Neighbors' Newscast announcement system.
For the past few years the City of Atlanta and her citizens have been
looking at ways to deal with a problem with the city sewer system.
The problem is that in parts of Atlanta the sanitary sewer system
(plumbing waste) use the same pipes as the storm sewer system (rain water).
During heavy rain this has frequently caused raw waste to overflow into
various rivers and streams. As the result of a lawsuit the city has agreed
to address the problem. The current administration favors a fix to the
current system that would add capacity in hopes of reducing the number and
amount of overflows. Many concerned citizens favor a plan to separate the
sanitary and storm lines where they currently share pipes, so as to
completely avoid the overflow problem.
This is an issue that will effect city residents both in terms of taxes and
fees and in terms of environmental quality.
Neighbor Robert Schreiber has been following this issue, and I have asked
him to prepare updates for the neighborhood. These updates may be just for
general information purposes, or they might come at a time related to a
specific public hearing or city council vote.
