At the January 17 General Meeting, Councilor Natalyn
Archibong asked us to give her Lake Claire's top three
priorities for 2002. She will put them on her master list
for all of the neighborhoods in District 5. At the meeting
the neighborhood decided to have the Executive Committee
make preliminary recommendations, solicit neighbor comment,
and finalize the three issues at the February General
Meeting.

The Executive Committee decided to focus on local issues
that need either city financial or legislative support, as
these are within the City Council's authority. Therefore,
some important issues that do not need city council support
this year were not considered. Likewise, issues outside
the neighborhood (such as effecting the airport or
downtown) were not considered, even though many residents
may find them important.

The preliminary recommendations by the Executive Committee
are as follows:

1) Safety and Accessibility Improvements to Lake Claire Park
Provide funding to install a safe and handicapped
accessible entrance into Lake Claire Park at Almeta
Avenue. Install a handrail at the stairs to Lakeshore
Drive. Improve the drainage of the play fields.

2) Traffic Safety Improvements
Provide funding to install a traffic light and crosswalk
signals at the intersection of DeKalb Avenue and
    Southerland Terrace.

3) Pedestrian Safety Improvements
Fund the replacement of critically damaged sidewalks and
installation of new sidewalks. In the near future the
    neighborhood will conduct a state-of-our-sidewalks
    survey prioritizing areas of concern.

All neighborhood residents are invited to submit comments
or suggestions concerning our top 3 issues. If you have
other ideas, or just want to tell us you agree with our
recommendations, please write to the Executive Committee
care of:
                3-issues@lakeclaire.org

Include your name, address, and comments. If possible
just send a brief note, as it will help our volunteers
compile the information.
